The pitfalls of Canva

Let me just clarify this is not a diss post on canva. It’s to make you aware of issues I’ve seen pop up time and time again with clients that can cause some pretty big issues. Knowledge is power so please read on….

What is Canva?

Canva is a popular online graphic design tool that allows users to create designs with ease. It offers a wide variety of templates, graphics, and design elements that are both customizable and affordable. However, while Canva is undoubtedly a great resource for many, there are also some significant pitfalls to be aware of.

Limited Customization Options

One of the most significant pitfalls of Canva is the limited customisation options available. While the platform offers a wide variety of templates and graphics, it can be challenging to make significant changes to these designs. This is because the designs are often created using a limited set of pre-designed elements that cannot be fully customized. This can be frustrating for those who need a unique design that accurately represents their brand.

Inadequate Branding Options

Canva can also be problematic for brands that need to ensure their designs are consistent with their branding. While the platform offers some branding options, such as the ability to upload your logo and select brand colours, these options are limited. For brands with complex branding guidelines, it can be challenging to create designs that accurately represent the brand using the limited customization options available.

Quality Concerns

Finally, the quality of designs created on Canva can be a concern. While the platform offers a wide variety of design elements, these elements may not always be of the highest quality. This can be especially problematic for brands that need to ensure their designs look professional and polished. Additionally, designs created on Canva may not always be suitable for print, which can be a concern for those who need high-quality prints.

What you can and should use canva for?

I often create social media templates in canva. It’s perfect for maintaining brand consistency for clients that want to self-manage their socials.
For digital marketing canva is really great for those that aren’t skilled designers to fudge their way through.

Whatever you do, do not create your logo in Canva. Anything created by canva elements can not be trademarked. Why? See below.
